2011 April

It is a sunset picture taken from near the side of the View Hotel on the lip of Monument Valley. It was late April, which meant that sunrise and sunset shots could be made at a decent hour and in reasonable temperatures. We stayed overnight for two nights to explore the area. It's in the middle of nowhere. The formations are West Mitten, East Mitten and Merrick Butte. The camera is a  Canon 40D with a Canon Zoom lens, and it was handheld. Monument Valley is a magical place and I recommend it to all picture takers.

While playing around with a camera I got off of eBay my cat jumped up onto a wooden chair to watch what I was doing.
He's full of great poses that last only a second or so!

I drove past a group of migrating Trumpeter Swans that were taking a break in a flooded pumpkin patch in the Kent valley, I went back home, got my camera and joined with a few other folks trying to capture the action.

Personally, I find winter trees devoid of foliage quite attractive. The denseness, uniformity, and random arrangements of the small branches, especially if lacking any dominant central figure, make the image almost like an abstract tapestry. The lack of bright colors also bring about a somber yet melancholic mood, which particularly suits my taste.

While cruising from Greece to Sicily our Mediterranean Sea cruise in June of 2008, we were alerted by the Captain that we would be cruising pass under the Rio-Antirio Bridge (the world's second longest cabled-stayed deck bridge) so we were out on the deck waiting for the moment. The bridge was impressive but the sunset was event more magical.  I have always love sunrise and sunset and I must have spent a good 30 minutes watching the sun till it dropped behind the mountain.  During which, I made multiple shots of both the bridge and the sunset using my Canon EOS Rebel XT on a tripod. Hope you enjoy this.

A lot is happening in this quiet pond image -- the cloud reflections, circular thin leaves, yellow flower, flat broad leaves and the rings from the bubble of swamp gas. That's the type complex nature story that I find engrossing.  But the color version of the image was so busy with those objects and with various green and blue hues that the lack of a central story distracted some viewers.  I tried converting to black and white, and enjoyed the resulting geometry, but could not stand to lose the flower color, so tried the technique shown by a club member and kept the color in the flower as a highlight.
